Ethnographic studies consist of observing consumer behavior in natural settings, such as homes or in stores, to build an understanding of consumer needs, wants and desires. This research methodology is ideal for uncovering consumer attitudes and behaviors, testing products and packages, and developing ad campaigns and new products. It is properly viewed as an exploratory or developmental tool, rather than one to drive final decisions.
